As the symptoms of recession escalates worldwide, many businesses are pushing back their expectations of when recovery will arrive.  Initially many thought the downturn would end Spring 2009, today most expect it to extend well into 2010.  Businesses will need to respond quickly to the twists and turns of the downturn.  We at CoreNet should be no different in supporting our members to adapt and succeed in a changing economy, providing the framework to make CoreNet UK an even stronger organisation - "The place to be" - not only when the economy improves but right now when we need the support and assistance of each other to keep focussed, motivated, and to improve our skills in managing in a downturn.

With this in mind, we have revisited our vision, mission and objectives to determine a three year strategy plan for CoreNet UK.

Our vision - to be the accepted voice of the occupier.  We are uniquely placed to articulate the views of the occupier, with 55% of our membership coming from Corporate Real Estate Occupiers.

Our mission - to be the leading UK forum for learning and sharing knowledge by engaging the Real Estate community and focusing on its members needs.  We have an exceptional opportunity to influence and change the property industry over the next 18 months.  My focus will be to use the enormous range of skills we have within CoreNet to improve the industry by providing distinctive responsible leadership, challenge and expressing views on key topics and issues.

Within our committee structure, we have introduced four new committees to focus on current topics - Sustainability, Workplace, Landlord and Tenant, and Specification. Sustainability and Workplace are consistent with CoreNet Global priorities, Landlord and Tenant is pretty specific to the UK and we seek to continue to press forward in terms of improving the work to date initiated by both the lease code and the service charge code.  Finally specification, to put us in a position to respond knowledgeably from the occupiers perspective to the many issues arising from the revisions to the BCO's Office Guide due to be launched in May.

CoreNet's strength is its people and we are looking to increase the opportunities for networking and sharing ideas. We have had a tremendous response from our members volunteering to serve on the various committees. The enthusiasm is terrific and will help provide an interesting and informative programme of events over the coming year.

It promises to be a tough 12 months but I am looking forward to building on the great work done by Robin in both raising the profile of CoreNet UK and reinforcing the brand.
